Frequently Asked Questions

How do QEEG and Neurofeedback work?

QEEGs allow Neurofeedback therapists to address the physiological basis of psychological, psychiatric, and neurological problems without medication or in conjunction with medication.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is an innovative, non-drug, non-invasive therapy that creates lasting, positive changes in the brain waves of adults and children. Sophisticated technology sensors are placed on the scalp to read the brain's electro-chemical flow. Specialized computer software records and feeds back information via sound and/or visual display. Through computerized feedback training a person learns how to modify his/her brain wave activity to improve attention, reduce impulsivity, stimulate under-aroused areas, and enable control of behaviors.

Who uses Neurofeedback?

People from all walks of life can benefit from Neurofeedback: lawyers, firemen, actors, artists, corporate executives, professional athletes, and children of all ages.

What conditions respond to Neurofeedback?

A partial list of conditions treated by Neurofeedback includes: Stress related disorders, hypertension, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, epilepsy, addictive behaviors, traumatic brain injury, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, chronic pain, gastro-intestinal disorders, neuromuscular problems, and Raynaud's Syndrome.

How many sessions does it take to obtain results?

Each person is highly individual and is working to address different conditions. Some progress can often be seen in as few as 10 Neurofeedback sessions. With many patients, 20-45 sessions are needed to aquire significant shifts in symptom patterns.

Are Neurofeedback and QEEG covered by insurance?

Insurance policies vary greatly and some cover 50-80 percent of the cost. Please see our Office Policies for more information about getting the most from your insurance.

Will I continue to take my medication while undergoing Neurofeedback training?

Your physician will work closely with you regarding medication. Neurofeedback training may result in your physician adjusting your medication in response to your progress. Many clients eventually have their medication discontinued by their physician due to the changes in brian wave operation.

If QEEG and Neurotherapy are so good, why aren't more clinicians using them?

Most psychologists and physicians simply have not been educated in the clinical applications of EEG biofeedback and are unaware of the existing research and clinical literature, in spite of the fact that the applications to anxiety, epilepsy, and ADD date back to the 1970's. Furthermore, the instrumentation is expensive and requires serious study and training to use competently. An estimated 1,000 clinicians are using Neurotherapy and QEEG in the USA.
